It’s an honor to welcome art writer and curator Teri Henderson back to Wilder Collage! This time we’ll be celebrating Black Collagists for Black History Month!

I couldn’t imagine having anyone else here to share and celebrate with us. Teri founded Black Collagists in 2020 and has continue to ignite our curiosity and grow our knowledge in this medium we all love.

Join us for this hour long call over zoom. Bring your questions and get ready to be in community to celebrate, learn and be inspired.

Teri Henderson (b. Fort Worth, TX, 1990) is a Baltimore-based independent curator, Baltimore Beat's Arts and Culture Editor, and the author of Black Collagists: The Book.  She is a contributing writer for Plastikcomb Magazine, and her writing has appeared in numerous publications, including The Washington Post, Artforum, BmoreArt, Justsmile Magazine, Kinfolk Travel, and the St. James Encyclopedia of Hip Hop Culture.

In 2020 Henderson started an Instagram account called @blackcollagists. This platform features the work of emerging and established collage artists to raise awareness about the history of Black collage art. Black Collagists: The Book, published in 2021, is a physical record of her research. Henderson focuses her work as a writer and curator on Black artists and creatives.

Burgay’s national and international exhibitions include: Unimedia Modern Contemporary Art (Genoa, Italy), Galerie Zurcher (Paris, France), Retroavangarda Gallery (Warsaw, Poland), and Sala Municipal de Exposiciones de La Pasión (Valladolid, Spain). Exhibitions in the US include Denise Bibro Gallery (NY), BRIC Gallery (NY), and Concord Art Visual Arts Center (MA). Her awards and residencies, include The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, Nebraska City, NE, The Eileen S Kaminsky Family Foundation at MANA Contemporary in Jersey City, NJ, The Jentel Artist Residency Program in Banner, Wyoming, and a fellowship and solo exhibition at A.I.R. Gallery, Brooklyn.

Burgay is also founder and editor of Cut Me Up, a participatory collage magazine and curatorial project. Each issue presents a curated selection of original mixed-media artworks, intended for readers to deconstruct, and transform into new artworks.

My name is Petra. I am an East-WestGerman graphic artist and writer.
After many years of a rather nomadic life, jumping back and forth between Germany, the UK, France, Singapore and Malaysia, I now work and live in Paris. I spend most of my days designing things, recycling images, and stringing words into sentences that are often quite elaborate and much longer than necessary or reasonable. Whatever time is left, I spend on books.

A few years ago, I re-discovered collage [the above-mentioned image recycling] as the art form that lets me combine and express all the things that interest me: images and words, old and new, good and bad, fact and fiction, hit and miss, and over time I developed a style that combines and expresses analog and digital.

In my work I deal with the visually oversaturated world I live in, and the over- as well as under-stimulation that comes with it. It’s my way of appropriating imagery that I most of the time, given the choice, wouldn’t have looked at in the first place.

I listen to a lot of music while I work, hence the music references everywhere. I love summer and the beach, hence the palm trees everywhere. And I have two pet bunnies called
Pepper & Dot, hence the bunny pictures everywhere.

Last but by no means least, currently mainly and above all, I'm the founder and creative director of
Paris Collage Collective, an international collage artist community that hopes to encourage creative expression, exchange and collaboration.

Laura Weiler

It’s an honor to welcome Laura Weiler to the Wilder Collage membership in November. Join Laura as she shares a highly anticipated topic: Filming and Editing your Creative Process for Social Media.

I’ve always thought that Laura shares her work/process in such a genuine way and I know I’m not alone when I say this has been a pain point in my practice that I’d love to improve. Let’s learn and grow together!

📅 Tuesday November 19th, 2024
⏰ 11:00am PT, 1:00pm CT, 2:00pm ET (Time Zone Converter)

Laura Weiler is a visual artist and arts facilitator working primarily in analog and digital collage as well as mixed media. Laura combines her love of paper ephemera and design to create dynamic and unexpected images. Informed by a background in film, photography, and floral design, her compositions are both dramatic and tender, rendered with psychological layers and given vital, expressive energy.

Laura’s work is part of the permanent collection at The Scandinavian Collage Museum in Norway. She has been published in multiple print and online publications worldwide including editorial illustrations for Cosmopolitan, Road & Track, and Bend Magazine. Her art direction projects cover interdisciplinary ground, such as floral design for Harpo Studios, album and mural design, commercials, and films screened at the Chicago International Film Festival. She has facilitated creative experiences for public and private audiences as well as government agencies with a concentration on affordable housing.

In 2021 Laura co-founded the Pacific Northwest Collage Collective to connect regional artists and celebrate collage as a medium. The PNWCC hosts open calls, and exhibitions and works closely with community-based collaborators.

Laura is now based in western Michigan by way of Portland, OR, and Chicago, IL. She is a member of the Portage Arts Committee and Collage Crew Kzoo. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring her home state and hanging out with her family and their slinky black cat Lucy.

📅 Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024
⏰ 10am PT, 12pm CT, 1pm ET (Time Zone Converter)

You can check out this podcast that Marryam did with my friend Mona last year. Exploring the World of Collage with Marryam Moma

Tanzanian-Nigerian visual artist Marryam Moma intricately reconstructs repurposed archival paper and mixed media, to create vibrant narratives, delving into the complexities of the Black experience. She highlights Black bodies, their strength and joy, while challenging societal perceptions. Moma's work is a masterful tapestry of multidimensional stories. Her analog collages grace international corporate collections like Microsoft, Google, and Starbucks.

Moma's influence spans TV shows like Blackish, Bel Air, and Cherish the Day, along with features in renowned publications such as Popular Science, MODE MEN Magazine, and XXL Magazine. Notably, Moma's analog collages are showcased in The New Brownies Book, recipient of the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Non-Fiction.

Departing from a Bachelor of Architecture, Moma draws inspiration from both the ordinary and the exceptional to reconstruct intricate analog collages from apparently disparate elements that uplift and empower. Moma's exhibitions in the US and internationally aim to promote understanding and inclusivity through art.

Artist Talk with Clive Knights

Join us Wednesday, September 25th for an Artist Talk with Clive Knights!

I have to say, Clive is one of the most requested artists we’ve had this year and we’re thrilled to welcome him to Wilder Collage.

Clive will be joining us in a zoom session to share about the themes that run through his work. He’s also generously shared an essay on the cultural value of collage which I’ll be sure to send out with the replay.

You can join this call through Patreon and I hope to see you there. Can’t wait!

Clive Knights is an English collagist, printmaker and creator of festival structures based in Portland, Oregon. He is represented by the gallerist Laura Vincent in Portland’s Pearl District.

Since 2021 he has had 3 solo shows of his collages and monotype prints in Portland, and solo shows at Sacripante Gallery in Rome, Italy (May 2023) and at the Muscarelle Museum of Art in Williamsburg, VA, (February thru May 2024). He has exhibited work in over 40 group shows in multiple US states and overseas, including England, Scotland, France, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Slovenia, Estonia, Norway, Ukraine and Italy. In April 2022 he curated the international exhibition Corporeal Gestures in Portland that included over 100 collages by more than 100 artists from 22 countries. He designed and published the catalogue of all the work in this show.

In June 2022 he published his first monograph covering work from the previous 3 years titled Gestures from a Body at Work: Unsuccessful Attempts at Grasping Eternity. He was the founding director of the School of Architecture at Portland State University, Portland, Oregon, and his work is influenced by a career in architectural education, by studies in the phenomenology of the human body, and by a fascination with the potential for innovations of meaning embodied in poetic works.

Instagram LIVE - Material Share

If I’ve learned anything from talking with collage artists across the globe, it’s that we share a common joy in treasure hunting the material we find for our work.

For instance, when I came across a retro yearbook from Santa Barbara in the 60s, I was ecstatic. I excitedly shared with the people around me and was met with an eyebrow raise and a, “Cool.”

Collage friends, I’d love for you to join me as I go LIVE on Instagram to share one of your recent finds or favorite finds. You can join me live and show the group or you can share in the comments — or simply come and be inspired by what you see and maybe be sparked on places to treasure hunt!

I love going LIVE with you and I think this will be so fun.

Since launching Visionary Art Collective in 2020, Fry has worked with over 300+ artists to help them advance their art careers. As part of her mission to increase visibility for artists, she partners up with top curators and gallerists to facilitate group exhibitions, publishes a contemporary art magazine, and hosts a podcast centered on art and entrepreneurship.

Additionally, Fry has been a guest speaker for the Women’s Caucus of Art in Washington D.C, Photo Trouvée Magazine, The Art Queens Society, and Huron River Art Collective. She has curated exhibitions for Create! Magazine, Arts to Hearts Project, The Artful Collective, and recently served as a juror for Women’s United Art Prize.

Fry obtained her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2012 and her MAT from Maine College of Art in 2014. Upon graduating, she moved to California for five years to continue her career as a painter and educator. After living in the Bay Area of San Francisco and Los Angeles, she is now thrilled to be living back in New York City.

Courtney Minor is Multidisciplinary artist specializing in collage, photography/film, assemblage and product design. Her work is rooted in her emotions, psychology/mental health, memories, travels, and love of science fiction.

Minor was born in Houston, Texas, USA, in 1984 and is a self taught Collagist at her core. Though taught the basics of art in elementary school & winning art awards at her private school, Minor took the long way around to becoming a professional artist. Early art mentor Kelvin Coney encouraged her to pursue her art, convincing her to do her first collage commission as an adult in 2007. However, between grammar school and that one off commission, Minor created no artworks until the winter of 2018. Working in her corporate job, she was unhappy and looked for an outlet for her creative musings. In an attempt to get away from it all, she flew to Vietnam for a break and began photographing herself, the locals and her surroundings. There she got her first idea to adhere her photographs to a canvas… to create a more thoughtful collage than what she had done prior. Upon returning to the USA, she delved head first into creating her collage works, first by printing her photographs to canvas paper then pasting images at varied scales onto the base canvas photograph. She began exploring incorporating other mediums such as acrylic paint and found object into her initial works. Her friends and mentor encouraged her to begin showing her work in the summer of 2019. Minor went on to an Instagram account, show her work Kell’s the Warrior Part 2 at Hang Night at the Heath Gallery in Harlem, NYC and allow a friend share her work with the art curator of Red Rooster Harlem. After that, as the saying goes, the rest was history.
