Kim says, “Amidst the kaleidoscope of life's moments, I have discovered my voice through the creation of mixed media collages. Originating during the Covid lockdown as a response to the prevailing anxiety, my journey into art unexpectedly evolved into a newfound passion. These collages have become my conduit to express the multifaceted roles I inhabit: a devoted stay-at-home wife, mother, and foster parent. Through the tactile act of tearing and cutting paper, I translate my experiences onto canvas, allowing them to flow intuitively.
If color serves as my language, then the layers of paint and paper weave together my narratives. Each collage is a blend of hues, mirroring the intricate emotional spectrum of my life. The interplay of vivid tones and the gentle shades of aged paper resonate with the profound depth of my journey. These creations show my maximalist inclinations, paying homage to the tumultuous yet rewarding voyage of motherhood and my domestic life.
My distinctive artistic style prominently features recurring elements—paper punches and cut-outs—that have organically become my signature. Analogous to my pursuit of understanding life's core beneath its layers, I physically carve through materials to unveil their connectedness with my life experiences. This tangible process acts as a bridge, interweaving my encounters with motherhood and my artistic expression.
As an autodidact, I revel in the liberty to experiment without self-imposed limitations. Unconventional tools like a kitchen spatula or a shaving brush, ordinary items found within my home, facilitate my creative exploration. These utilitarian objects transform into conduits for my artistic vision, capturing the essence of my immediate surroundings. Additionally, by rescuing forgotten treasures from thrift stores—aged books, vintage magazines, postcards, and ephemera—I breathe renewed significance into overlooked narratives When I work with these things, I dissolve the boundary between the ordinary and the artistic, perpetually reminding myself that beauty thrives within the mundane.
Engaging in art has become my daily ritual, an impassioned pursuit that fills me with immense joy and gratification. My objective is to strike a chord within others, offering them art that deeply resonates with their personal experiences. Ultimately, my art functions as a reflection of the strata of my intricate life, encapsulating the optimism found in foster parenting and the resilience within stay-at-home motherhood. With each collage, I extend an invitation for others to unearth their own narratives and forge a connection within the vibrant collection of my art.”
